Casa
de los Coroneles
The most outstanding noble building on the island
and the best example of its heritage.
Built in the second half of the 17th century, this
embattled building was the headquarter of the military
governors. The main entrance to the Casa de los
Coroneles is topped by a coat of arms made up of
a goat, a tree and a crown; the wooden balconies
on the outside are decorated with barroque carvings.
Cueva del Llano
This cave is unique among the lava pipes of the
Canaries. It is a special example, as it provides
information about the general erosion of Fuerteventura,
and has an abundance of animal fossils trapped
in its sediments. This visitor’s centre
shows almost 400m of accessible cave. The cave
was constructed from a volcanic pipe of considerable
dimensions, and is accessed via a large jameo
(part of the tube whose roof has collapsed) divided
into two branches. The cave is a million years
old, and is the oldest in all the Canary Islands.
Most
of the island’s beautiful coast is scattered
with enchanting, golden sandy beaches merging into
crystal clear waters.
The impressing dune ecosystem of Corralejo
is an amazing geological feature that, together
with the Islands of Lobos and Lanzarote, forms a
breathtaking scenery.

along with “papas arrugadas” (small
unpeeled potatoes), “mojo” sauce and

meat is most popular on the Island.

Caleta de Fuste is located only 10 km south of the Fuerteventura Airport. In Caleta de Fuste you can find, besides the magnificent sandy beach, plenty of water sports and a fully equipped marina. The Oceanarium, the 18-holes Golf circuits and the huge Thalasso Spa, besides of its interesting gastronomic offer, make of Caleta de Fuste one of the most complete resorts on Fuerteventura.
Caleta de Fuste belongs to the municipality of Antigua, in the middle-east of Fuerteventura.
The island has an excellent climate with an average temperature of 20 degree Celsius. Rain is rare all over the zone, due to the lack of high mountains.
El Castillo de Caleta de Fustes
This is one of two existing examples of military architecture on Fuerteventura.
This tower is called Torre de San Buenaventura or Castillo de Caleta de Fustes, planned by Claudio de L'Isle, a military engineer, and built in the 18th Century.
The reason for its building were the frequent pirate attacks aiming to capture the merchant ships casting anchor at the bay of Caleta de Fuste and thus the necessity of defending it. It is a small building made of local black stone, with a bridge to its only door and, in its interior, a vaulted chamber and a water tank to supply the garrison.
Salinas del Carmen y Museo de la sal
The Fuerteventura Salt Museum is situated in the town of Las Salinas in the district of La Antigua, beside the El Carmen Salt Pans (just south of Caleta de Fuste). It is a cultural complex formed by the El Carmen Salt Flats built in around 1910 and a museum centre that provides an overall view of the culture arising around salt and of its distinctive habitat, which is the living space for a large number of micro organisms and migratory birds.
Molino de Antigua
The Centro de Artesanía Molino de Antigua (Antigua Windmill Craft Centre) has a garden with indigenous flora, including various species of cactus and palmtrees. Alongside the garden there is an old gofio (maize) mill, with the traditional milling equipment on display inside.
The gastronomy of the Municipality of Antigua is the result of influences of the different cultures present on the inland and is made of locally grown products, fresh meat and fish.
Among the local specialities, one should not miss the sancocho de pescado y papas (a kind of fish and potatoes soup) with mojo (sauce) and gofio amasado (dough balls); the puchero (goat meat and vegetable stew), served after the sopa de fideos (broth with noodles). Very popular is the local goat cheese, available at different ripening stages: fresh, half-ripe and ripe.
In Caleta de Fuste you will find plenty of restaurants to everybody's taste and budget.
Caleta de Fuste offers two magnificent 18 holes-Golf Courses to practise this fascinating sport: the Golf Club Salinas de Antigua and the Golf Club Fuerteventura.
Centro de Talasoterapia
The Thalasso Spa Center has 3000 m2 of innovative installations and extraordinary sea-water pools at 37º degrees, which, along with the unique surroundings, offer all over the year a perfect location to enjoy the nourishing and remineralizing properties of sea water, as well as the benefits of Hydrotherapy. Here you can pamper your body and soul, find well-being, balance your mind and feel your senses awaken trough a new experience based on sea-water spa, steam baths, whirlpool and thermal contrasts. Enjoy the most innovative beauty and health treatments and massages.
Oceanarium y Puerto deportivo
The sea is the major protagonist of sport and entertainment in Antigua.
The amenities of Puerto Castillo are located in Caleta de Fuste, where the main attraction is the unique Oceanarium. Here we have the opportunity to admire in tank-baskets submerged in seawater examples of the most characteristic marine fauna of the area, which are caught for exhibition and later released periodically. The main attractions are the moray eels, filefish, grouper, amberjacks, parrot fish, salema, rock snapper, and conger eels. It is also quite remarkable to observe the intelligence and skill of an octopus capable of unscrewing the lid of a glass jar in order to reach the food inside. If you want to feel the softness of the skin of a ray or experience the excitement of touching the rough skin of a shark then we recommend you do not miss the opportunity to do so in the Oceanarium, as this is one of the few places in the world where this is possible.
Two semi-submergible submarines leave from the Oceanarium for a 45-minute journey in the vicinity of the port. On this trip you can see some shipwrecks, pelagic fish such as pompano, barracuda and occasionally angel sharks, ray mantas and other rays.
In the Oceanarium Explorer you will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with californian sealions.
They are the only sealions in the world trained to go to the open sea and return home!
You will meet Harley, Dougie, Debbie and Donna on your return from your excursion on either the submarine or the catamaran and they will be happy to show you some of the skills they have learned since arriving on the island.
The sealions are very friendly and love kissing, you have the chance to get close to and kiss Harley while one of the experienced guides captures the moment on film for you to take home.
If you have more than four hours to spare, we recommend a sailing excursion on a twenty five meter catamaran. On many of these excursions there are unforgettable encounters with playful dolphins that come to meet the boat in order to show off or have a race with the catamaran. There is also the opportunity to swim with loggerhead sea turtles. Although less frequent, there is the possibility of seeing pilot whales or some other large species of whale.
There is fun for the children with a visit to the replica of a pirate ship anchored at the wharf.
Between the Marina (Puerto Deportivo) and the beach of Caleta de Fuste all sorts of water sports can be practised, including kayaking, jet skiing, banana boat and water skiing, and there are all sorts of craft for hire. Information on the Oceanarium and water sports on (0034) 928 163514, fax 163999, E-Mail marcan@abaforum.es.
There is also windsurfing, with a well-equipped school ideal for beginners who wish to make the most of the winds of Fuerteventura in a bay sheltered from the waves; Ph: (0034) 659552408.
MORE LEISURE
The territory of the Municipality of Antigua, with its natural environments, is perfect to be discovered by walking and cycling enthusiasts... and, why not on an excursion on the back of a camel, a traditional companion of the peasant of Fuerteventura, which is now a popular attraction for visitors; camel-rides are organised by Camello Caravana, on the very beach of Caleta de Fuste, Ph. (0034) 676 319242.
